The Earth Society denies the reason for not adopting the 2020 water strategy

After the Lebanese Land Association’s 2020 poll on Lebanon’s environmental priorities, after the topic of water took a prominent place, the association launched a nationwide water A water resource strategy starting from energy and water resources, the association said in a statement that it has hired a team of experts, and their research has finally led to a series of observations.

It was pointed out that “the strategy is only published in English and consists of six volumes”, and pointed out that “the strategy was formulated by private companies operating in the water sector whose interests conflicted with public interests and water resources. Despite the failure of the strategy in 2010 and the The project was in vain, but the 2020 strategy was merged with the 2020 strategy.

The association emphasized that “in the process of planning and implementation, there was no coordination with ministries interested in the water sector, and its role was limited to supervision. Principles of organization and cooperation. The statement said: "The strategy formally adopts an integrated approach to water resources management. "The focus is on the supply-side approach to water resources management," while "there is no emphasis on the demand-side approach to water management.

The statement also stated that “the strategy is based on weak or unavailable data (indicating a lack of vigilance on public and private wells), fragmented water balances and unresolved government water balances. The association added in a statement that “the prioritization process is not It is clear that contingency planning and risk analysis were not carried out" because "the use of data is selective, and decisions based on nature are not credible... The crisis and its use of surface water reserves are not taken into account, even though the dam is useless And the environment have been destroyed, but the construction of the dam continues, the maintenance of the infrastructure is not given priority, the water transfer project between the river basins (Janna and Awali waters to Beirut) is still continuing, and the necessary transformation does not take into account agricultural practices And the rationalization of irrigation does not take into account the plan to restore degraded ecosystems that affect water resources. In addition to identifying vegetation areas that need to be protected, to protect rivers, springs, wetlands and underground reservoirs from various types of pollution and human activities.

For all these reasons, the Earth Society calls on citizens to "reject this strategy that is not in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and calls for a new strategy that takes into account previous observations.
